Papal Visit to Birmingham

Pope Benedict’s planned visit to Great Britain starts on 16th September. The Pope will spend three days in Scotland and London before coming to Birmingham  on 19th for the culmination of his visit. It is believed that this will include a Popemobile tour through the streets including Hagley Road and Bristol Road, both of which are close to the Hotel. This final day of the visit is focused very much on the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman, and the Pope will celebrate that beatification in Cofton Park in Birmingham – adjacent, fittingly, to Rednal where Cardinal Newman was buried and the place where Newman and his community came for rest and recreation in the Lickey Hills.  See the full itinery. Cofton Park is approximately a mile from the Madeira and we are already taking bookings for this unique and historic event, so to be sure of somewhere to stay contact us now to reserve your accommodation.

Smooth Radio MacMillan Appeal

Several weeks ago Stella (the proprietor) heard about an event being organised by Smooth Radio. The aim of The Starlight Supper was to get the listeners to hold dinner parties on a particular date as a fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support. Being an organisation that has helped and supported several family members, Stella decided to take part. Unfortunately an evening supper could not be arranged to fit in with the day to day running of the hotel. Undeterred, Stella opted for a Charity Luncheon on Sunday 14th March, which, coincidentally, was Mothering Sunday. The family traditionally get together and go for a meal, but this year Stella told them that she would cook the meal and they could donate the money to the charity. Invitations and Menu’s were designed, printed and sent out, word spread and very soon the quiet family luncheon had turned into a mass event with over 30 people to cater for! Family and friends gave their help for free and the day was a great success, with Stella cooking a choice of 3 starters, 3 main courses and a selection of desserts, one of which was a Raymond Blanc chocolate recipe that she had never done before. During the day there was a prize for the person who could guess the total amount raised and the guest that won the bottle of Champagne was just 10p out! The excellent food and great conversation made this a day to remember and a grand total of £835.20 was raised. Stella said that she would like to help this charity again but could she do something easier like running a marathon or climbing Everest!

Valentines Day & Chinese New Year

Valentines Day at the Madeira was a memorable occasion for one couple who had booked a romantic weekend break. They arrived on Friday to find chocolates in their room! On Saturday after a full English breakfast they spent most of the day at Cadbury World, (always worth a visit) then on to a local restaurant for a cDragonandlelit meal. Valentines day was also the start of the Chinese New Year and they took the short trip to the City Centre where The Year of the Tiger was being celebrated at the Arcadian centre with a spectacular 4 hour festival.

Stella (the proprietor) presented another couple with a white, heart-shaped cake that she had made and decorated especially for them. Who said romance was dead?Valentine Cake

50 Years of the Mini

Minis at The Madeira

Minis at The Madeira

2009 saw the 50th anniversary of the birth of the Mini. To celebrate this a convention was held at nearby Cofton Park for drivers and enthusiasts. Amongst the visitors were 9 mechanics from Holland who chose to stay at The Madeira Hotel during this event. While they were at the venue they amazed other enthusiasts by taking a Mini engine out of the vehicle, stripping it down and rebuilding it in perfect working order within a matter of hours! One of the cars had a trailer attached, which, the owner told us, he had made himself using the back ends of Two Minis!  The weekend was a huge success and although the car park resembled a scene from The Italian Job, a great time was had by all and it was a real pleasure meeting these guys.
